South Africa has beautiful beaches. From the white stretches of the west coast,
through the golden bays in the south, the rugged cliffs of the wild coast and the warm waters of the east.
But to be honest, if you are looking for a sun, sand and sea kind of holiday, South Africa is not your best bet.
On the west coast the water is barely above freezing, in the south there are sharks and on the east coast the waves and currents make swimming treacherous. But luckily, South Africa has paradise beaches right next door!
My suggestion to beach-lovers is to add a visit to one of the excellent nearby beach destinations instead.
Mozambique is less than two hours away, Zanzibar less than 4 hours and Mauritius just over 4 hours.
My favourite is definitely Mozambique! Not only is it close, but the country has some of the world's best beaches, mouthwatering seafood and a fabulous laid-back attitude to match it. In the north, you'll find private paradise islands and plenty of reminders of the area's Arabic past. In the central area there are plenty of options from budget to fancy. If you are really pressed for time, you can even just pop across to Maputo where you can combine your beach break with a visit to the bustling city that offers a unique blend of architecture and cultures.
