A pan-African table

Not long ago, I went to Yeoville close to downtown Johannesburg to try a different food experience that I had heard a lot about. In a small room overlooking the main street of Yeoville, and area known for its diverse African population, Sanza has set up a big table to which everyone is invited to a "pan-African eating experience". Taking inspiration from his neighbours from places as ar and wide as Nigeria, Ghana, Congo and Zimbabwe, Sanza prepares a fabulous spread of platters for everyone to share. He also sources dishes from local businesses, like the lady that has prepared fish at the market for longer than Sanza has been able to talk.

Around the table were South Africans, tourists and Sanza's friends from the area. Lunch lasted until late afternoon, and ended with a traditional Ethiopian cup of coffee at a small roadside stall. We also took a stroll through the market, where specialities from the whole of Africa are sold: dried fish, vegetables I've never seen (or heard of) before and spices were piled high next to colourful fabric, pipes and sweets. An unforgettable day!
