On a recent hiking tour with Swedish operator Vandra Mera, we spent 5 days walking in the wilderness area of Hluhluwe. Eqiupped with only the bare basics, we walked across grass fields and through indigenous forests where once Shaka Zulu hunted with his warriors. We camped along the Mfolozi river and slept under a million stars.
It was a time to slow down, and connect with nature. It is pure magic to sit on a cliff, watching the sun set over the wilderness while an elephant slowly makes its way to the river for an evening drink and dustbath. We followed the rhythm of nature, waking as the sun rose and going to bed as it got dark. Every night, we took turns minding the fire and keeping a look-out for wild animals. For many, this was the absolute highlight of the experience: to be all alone with the African night, caressed by the velvety darkness and comforted by the crackling fire.
I truly recommend a wilderness hike for everyone that loves nature and wants to reconnect with what is important in life!
