Kolmanskop was in the early 1900's a flourishing diamond town with over 1,000 inhabitants. It was completely self-sufficient, and had everything from a butchery to a bowling alley and even an ice factory! But as the diamonds slowly ran out, and the hardship of the First World War hit German South-West Africa hard, the town was abandoned.
Today, you can visit the town and discover the ghosts of days gone by. It is an eerie feeling to enter the once magnificent houses that have been almost entirely reclaimed by the harsh desert environment.
