Durban is best-known for its fabulous beaches, but there is much more to this Indian Ocean city. Located in the middle of Kwa Zulu (the place of the Zulu people) and with one of the world's largest Indian populations outside of India, the city is a virtual melting pot of cultures and people.
Take a tour with a local guide to experience places that few tourists get to see. We walked through alleyways with local markets selling anything from zulu beads to large cast iron pots, past mosques and churches and into the meat market where sheep's heads were piled high next to chicken feet. We tasted spices at the Indian market, and got a glimpse of the medicinal herbs and potions at the muti market.
The music was blaring and the smells were overpowering. This is the real city! It pulsates around you, and draws you in. It's curious and uncomfortable and very real. It's an experience that you will not forget.
